Almost 70,000 Americans15 fell prey to romance scams in 2022, losing around $4,400 on average. Moreover, considering the unique nature of long-distance international relationships, online dating site users are especially vulnerable to scams, such as:
- Direct requests for money. Scammers can couch them as desperate pleas for help, claiming illness, legal trouble, or natural disasters. To avoid this type of scam, do not send money to anyone you’ve never met in person.
- Investment opportunities. The rise of cryptocurrencies made this type of scam especially popular. Your bank account will remain safe as long as you remember no investment can produce a 100% return within a year, let alone a month.
- Unexpected gift delivery. A scammer will ask you to cover the shipping, tax, or other fees for a valuable delivery coming your way, but they’ll disappear with your money, and you’ll never receive the package. To stay out of trouble, ignore payment requests and offer to send money after you receive the delivery.
- Payment offers. Some scammers may offer to send you a small payment to build trust, but it’s usually a way to get you to reveal your credit card information. If you’re not careful, they will get access to your bank account and steal your money.

How To Take a Polish Bride to the US
Before your Polish bride can come to the US, both of you will have your work cut out for you:
- You’ll need to file a Petition for Alien Fiance (Form I-129F) and provide relationship evidence and financial support paperwork.
- Your fiance will need to collect paperwork for applying for a nonimmigrant visa (Form DS-160), go through a medical exam and an interview at the embassy or consulate, organize her trip, and ship her belongings to the US.
Once your Polish fiance receives her visa and clears border control, you’ll have more obstacles to tackle:
- You’ll need to formalize your relationship within 90 days or risk your fiance’s deportation. A simple city hall or courthouse marriage should suffice, though you may wish to plan a wedding ceremony.
- Your Polish wife can then apply for an adjustment of status (Form I-485) and an employment permit (Form I-765) to start her new life in the US.
